25 years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall

In November 2014, CESS will organise a multi-day-event in the context of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which happened exactly 25 years ago. If we want to understand todays perceptions of peace, democracy and security, it is of the utmost importance to keep the memory of the Cold War alive. The event will start on November 3 and end on November 6. In this week we organize a wide variety of activities, ranging from a panel discussions and a master class to film nights, debate sessions and a photo exhibition.

This multi-day-event is generously funded by the Dutch Vfonds (Nationaal Fonds voor Vrede, Vrijheid en Veteranenzorg).

In what way is todays Dutch and European situation, in terms of security, influenced by this specific period in world history? To what extent are current security issues the result of developments originating from the Cold War, such as the nuclear arms race, espionage, and NATO's transformation? What can we learn from all this? Our project aims at answering these important questions.

Generously funded by the Dutch vfonds, this event will be organised in the city of Groningen, the Netherlands, home base of CESS. It will consist of many interactive sessions and other activities, such as a masterclass, a panel debate, a photo exhibition, film nights and more. Our guests include journalist and historian Geert Mak, former leader of the Socialist Unity Party of East Germany Egon Krenz, a leading BVD officer, commanders from the Royal Dutch Military, and professors from several Dutch universities.

More information about the activities can be found on the website and the facebook page. More information about Vfonds can be found on the websiteWatch the video about Vfonds here: Vfonds Film.

Onze activiteiten worden mede mogelijk gemaakt door het vfonds met middelen uit de Nationale Postcode Loterij en de BankGiro Loterij. Uw deelname aan deze loterijen wordt daarom van harte aanbevolen.
